    HIIT workout (20min):
    - Rocket jumps - 30s on, 30s rest x 4
    - Elevated toe touches - 30s on, 30s rest x 4
    - Dynamic knee raises - 30s on, 30s rest x 4
    - Jumping lunges - 30s on, 30s rest x 4
    - Burpees - 30s on, 30s rest x 4
    Explosive workout (1 hour):
    - Kneel to box jumps - 20s on, 100s rest x 5
    - Vertical jumps - 20s on, 100s rest x 5
    - Forward bounds - 20s on, 100s rest x 5
    - Plyo pull-ups - 20s on, 100s rest x 5
    - Lateral bounds - 20s on, 100s rest x 5
    - Jumping lunges - 20s on, 100s rest x 5

Sydney Cummings has a youtube channel with a couple of Plyo workouts. Just search her channel for 'plyo'. I find a get a much better calorie burn workout from plyo than some other hiit workouts. I mean you are jumping a lot more which can be bad for some people, but I love it.

Those moves r great in ur 30 s. But on ur sixties u gotta watch ur hips. Lol. But HIIT is very imp for BDNF and stem cells. I did the Firm, jumps rope and lifted weights at ur age. That gymnastic stuff would have killed me.

What a fantastic comparison! I've done HIIT many times but never a plyo workout with long rest like this.. U r so right about rest... I have over-trained all my life! Some of the very few best workouts I've ever done have been the first one back after a holiday! Then I was right back into doing the next one too soon and carrying on like that til my next break! Why couldn't u have made this video 40yrs ago when I was young?!? 😜 😜

@Adelaide that makes sense. I'll try picking up more of that stuff. I'm just always shocked how few calories are in any given food. I'll eat what feels like a mountain of oatmeal, fruit and peanut butter, and my calorie counters is like "400 kcals!" HOW SWAY?!

@Adelaide same! I have such a hard time remembering to eat. I actually love food, and am a bit of a foodie, but I'll often go until 4pm without remembering to eat. Getting up to 1400 calories is a struggle!

Adelaide i agree. it isn't something that i necessarily rely on now that i kind of know how much i eat, but i struggle with some minor anxiety so i when i don't track i end up not eating enough

hannah • 6 years ago using tracking Can be very useful for people cutting, bulking or just to make sure they eat enough. I also use tracking to make sure i eat enough. If i didnt i would forget to eat and i wouldnt get past 1000 calories. But for people who have good hunger signals and is just maintaining, intuitive eating is a great alternative. Though i would be careful with getting too obsessed or finding too mutch Security in calorie tracking.

I'd be interested to see the difference between doing the same workout as HIIT vs with longer rest periods. While you did some of the same exercises (e.g. jumping lunges), not all were the same. Could anybody take a HIIT workout and apply this principle to make a longer workout out of it just by extending the rest, or adjusting the number of sets (e.g. you did 5 sets in the plyo but only 4 in the HIIT workout). Would this have a similar result?

Ok I haven’t watched the entire video yet so maybe you explain it but why would you compare 20 minutes of HIIT to an hour of Plyo? Of course you’re going to burn more calories in an hour than you will in 20 minutes. I don’t get it. Do an hour of HIIT and an hour of Plyo and then see which one burns more.

So interesting. The problem is I can't properly do plyo moves at home without my neighbours killing me. I generally try to do a mix of low-impact strength and cardio moves, or sometimes HIIT but without too much jumping. Lack of space and worrying about neighbours every time you work out does become kind of limiting. However overall I would probably always prefer HIIT simply because getting your workout over with in 20 minutes is super ideal when you have to cram it into your work day.

For the measurement of heart rate for one day after, was it done since the start time of the workout, or was it counted after the workout? It matters.

If you took the same moves you did in your HIIT workout and structured it like the plyo workout (longer rest periods & more reps) would you see the same result? Or are you seeing the result because of the type of explosive moves mixed with the structure? I'd love to see you put out a YT workout like the explosive 1 hour workout you tested here!
