I've been asked to take a look through the diet + weight loss content on TikTok so many times recently. Social media is full of scams and hearsay and I hope this video's a little reminder to show love to anyone online who might be struggling and point them towards qualified voices: Registered Dietitians and Medical Doctors.
For science-based home and gym workout programmes to build muscle, lose fat, or get athletic, my training + nutrition guides approved by a world-leading nutrition expert behind the British Olympic team are available on www.natachaoceane.com ❤️

In case it helps, Britain’s NHS shares that 2,223 calories is the average estimated energy requirement for a 13 year old girl. This only increases through adolescence (it’s nearly 2,500 calories for 17 y/o girls) and bear in mind that this is assuming an average level of activity which realistically isn’t going to be that much. Growth and development have significant energy requirements and we shouldn’t just take them as assumed ♥️ I hope it helps, love ya 💛 https://www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/childrens-health/how-many-calories-do-teenagers-need/

But in the same British NHS website that also share there 12 week plan to lose weight ,' For most men, this means sticking to a calorie limit of no more than 1,900kcal a day, and 1,400kcal for most women'. It also states To lose weight, the average person should reduce their daily calorie intake by 600kcal' I feel like saying this on a health service that reduce their calorie intake by 600 kcal is ridiculous because my thirteen year old self did take this very seriously and was only eating 1,200 calories a day. I feel like it should change to 400 - 500 kcal. What's your opinion?

I really cant thank you enough. I am 13 and i have been struggling with under eating for a year now i only ate around 500 calories a day. Right now i am trying to recover but because i underate for so long i find 1500 calories a lot. You've helped me seeing that that is not the case

Actually, no. This is calculated for everybody differently, based on the way they're built, whether they need to lose, maintain or gain weight, their height, their activity level, age, etc. I got it calculated by a couple of professionals and it said my body needs at least 1850 to maintain (on average, based on 4 different professionals). I calculated how much I actually eat, just for fun, and it was around 2000 on average per week. I'm 22 years old, weigh 58kg on height of 167cm. So no, 2500 calories for me certainly would require so much more exercise than I already do (I dance professionally).

I once obsessed over having a calorie deficit and would sneak a “500-cal workout” when I go over at 10pm just to hit the deficit target. I started having irregular periods and I decided and it wasn’t the way to go. It’s so easy to get pressured and trapped into unhealthy diets and I’m grateful for influencers like you shedding more light into the issue.

I feel like dieting can be healthy only if you need to lose weight. (Like if you are an unhealthy weight and your doctor has talked to you about it) It needs to be done in a safe way and the person should be careful to not develop unhealthy under eating. It’s a healthy balance :)

I have been trying to lose weight for over 6 years, I absolutely hate myself, even if I'm on the lower end of the healthy bmi. I still want to get slimmer, I'm obsessed with it. I religiously count my calories and never go over 1100. I am always fatigued, irritated and depressed. I have huge cravings and I feel like my whole day is controled by food. I know I have a problem, but I don't know how to get help for it. I saw a nutritionist and she basically told me that my goal weight (53kg at 173cm) is basically nothing and I could get there quick and she gave me a 900 calories a day diet full of boring and bland food. Now I've become a monster, I can't help but see the damage it does to my body, my hair is getting thinner, but at the same time I'm scared to death of gaining weight. I feel like if I start eating anything more than I do know, I will get fat and hideous. Note that my calorie intake now just keeps me at my current weight (57kg) and I just can't seem to lose more even if that's all I want.

I grew up around someone who didn't eat enough and I always thought that was what I needed to do too to get healthy. I was always more active and couldn't maintain eating so little - now I know it was my body literally telling me I needed more sustenance! Thank you for helping me love food and love my body :) It means a lot!

The thing about these tik toks are that people are trying to find short cuts to being healthier or losing weight. THERE ARE NO SHORT CUTS! Trust me, I've looked for so many. Like those metabolism drops, instead of working out and eating healthier like normal, they chose the dangerous route by taking the drops. Yes there are short cuts but they aren't healthy. Just because they are losing weight and are skinny doesn't mean they are healthy.

Girls who starve themselves thinking skinny is superior... you will age fast. You’ll look 40 when you’re hitting late 20s. I’ve seen it. I’d rather be normal weight than old and wrinkly when I’m still young.

The thing is,people need to understand that there’s a limit to where they can genetically drop body fat/weight to.Some people can maintain abs and leanness year round without even trying because their appetite isn’t that good and they are eating to appitite which is intuitive eating. And some people are always hungry and their genetics don’t allow them to be lean.A lot of you guys give shit to people who has no appitite and are actually intutively eating and can maintain their body weight there.Just because someone doesn’t have abs doesn’t mean they are unhealthy, but the other way goes as well.Just because someone has abs doesn’t mean they are unhealthy

Thanks so much for speaking up about all this Natacha! There can be A LOT of toxic stuff out their on social media. I am personally an Arbonne consultant myself and would love to clear the air on our products! to put things simply, our protein is just like any other protein you'd get at any other store. Ours happens to be vegan, cruelty free, ethically made and delicious! :) The key ingredients of our protein are pea protein, rice protein and cranberry protein. Nothing to be worried about. We sell extremely clean products and you can feel confident knowing that our products are safe for your body. To give some context, the FDA only has 11 ingredients banned from products but arbonne has 2000 ingredients on it's "not allowed" list. As for the detox tea... we don't actually sell those. I checked our catalogue and website and all we sell our herbal teas. The person in that tic tock likely was using one of our herbal teas and called it a "detox" tea. If you're looking for waist trainers and skinny teas, Arbonne is not the place! Additionally, as someone who has struggled with their relationship with food in the past, I am super passionate about helping others fostering a healthy relationship with food. I would never represent a company that goes against this part of my personal ethos. Please feel free to ask me any additional questions wether it be Arbonne, my past struggles or whatever! You can contact me via DM through my instagram @isabella_deconti_fitness I post all about pursing strength based goals and saying screw you to aesthetics! Much love!

I feel like the reason why people drop weight so drastically with ACV or juices is either because of the fibre content or the enzymes which helps with digestion. so the weight they lost is probably water weight. but yes, I do agree that the diet culture on tiktok is kinda problematic. the comments u see on those videos are actually concerning too.

Omg I loved this video and you ate very well educated. Something else to add is that everybody’s body is different. How and where you gain and lose weight ranges from person to person. Everyone also has a different metabolism so somethings to boost it might work for others and not you, and that’s totally fine! Different bodys need certain types of food and have certain foods that make them full. Health and fitness is not a one size fits all. Learn to love your body the way it is and find out what is best for it to keep yourself happy. We are all different and beautiful in our own way😊💗

It is very hard to have a good relationship with food... I used to think that 1000 calories was the maximum I should eat. I’m a dancer that dances 4 hours a day and I’m only 13 years old!! And my metabolism is very fast... PLEASE PLEASE EAT FOOD

The calories depends on your height, weight, age...for example i am 24yo, 155cm,50kg=about 1700 calories are the normal for me. If i want to lose weight it would be 1200-1000 kcal. You can calculate your ideal calorie amount.

Thanks for covering this topic. It's so important for young girls (and some of us older girls) to hear. OMG, I laughed so hard at your burrito story. "It's not going to fit." "Yes, it is, I believe in you."

You know who I look up to and get inspired by? Me. Those 1200 cal diets scare me. I'm aiming for 1900, and losing nearly a kilo a week.

If you’re overweight, it’s your fault. It’s because of poor choices and habits you’ve acquired. That’s it. It’s not “diet culture” or tik tok or sports illustrated swim suit edition or any of that nonsense. Take responsibility and start making changes before it’s too late. I’m proud to say I’m “fatphobic”. Being obese would be awful and I’d NEVER want it to happen to me. Tell me something; how many elderly obese people do you see? Very few, if any. Because they die at a young age. No human body is meant to be that big! It’s not natural. Facts only.

Hi everyone :) I’m a 13 year old girl, and I just wanted to share a bit of a story about my relationship with food. Ever since I was very young, around 5-6 years old, I thought I needed to be skinny. I would see girls in the books I read or tv shows I watched either telling themselves they needed to watch what they ate, or having someone else tell them so. Stuff like that was always in the back of my mind growing up, although I didn’t really care what I was eating until I was about 10 years old, I still always attempted to work out or exercise in whatever way I could find that I didn’t think took too much effort. I have a specific memory from when I was about 9 years old of my mom walking in on me attempting to do sit-ups, and when she asked what I was doing I replied “swimsuit season is coming up, I need to get in shape” a funny memory, yet gives you a bit of an idea about how I was influenced. It may not seem like a huge deal, but personally I think a nine year old knowing about ‘swimsuit season’ and being determined to be skinny before then because of influence from things such as social media is a bit alarming. Anyways, moving on, eating didn’t become a huge thing I was mindful of until about 11-12. Around that time I developed an eating disorder. I started counting calories and restricting food, which would quite often lead me to binging later on, which would then make me feel guilty. Often times I would sit on the toilet for long periods of time trying to force myself to, well, get all of the food I just binged out. It’s a bit embarrassing but it is what happened. Late last year, I started hanging out with a group of friends who were very toxic, which I didn’t know at the time. They constantly complained about their weight, how ‘fat’ they were, how out of shape they were, yet did nothing healthy about it, leading me to do the same. In fact, most of our days hanging out (which was almost every other day) were spent drinking extra large sodas and chips that we would scrounge our little money together to buy at the gas station. Of course that was very unhealthy, but for a little while the eating disorder thoughts went away. I didn’t think about calories or sugar, I just enjoyed having fun and eating like that all the time. (I wasn’t really allowed to have many sugary foods or drinks growing up, I was raised mostly eating healthy foods, so being able to eat like that every day was a whole new experience for me.) When we entered quarantine, of course I couldn’t go out with them every day anymore, and taking a step back from that life style I realized how unhealthy it was. For a few months tho, I ate mostly the same, feeling terrible about my body but enjoying unhealthy food too much to care. (Here’s where tiktok comes in) A few months in however, I started being exposed to more weight loss trends on tiktok. Of course there was the whole ‘glow up during quarantine’ thing where everyone was obsessed with Chloe ting, but that was perfectly fine. I tried a few of her workouts but could never stick to them 😅. Anyways, from there I started drifting more into purely weight loss tiktok. I started becoming more and more obsessed with fasting and weight loss recipes, stuff like lemon water etc. The eating disorder came back, and I started developing depression very quickly. I would try and go days and days without eating, and if I couldn’t I would feel guilty and ashamed, which often lead to binge eating. I was fed all this false information about weight loss, how I should be in an extreme calorie deficit, how I should stay under 1000 calories per day. That went on for months. I saw no progress in my body of course, and it came to be that whenever I ate anything or drank anything other than water, I would get extremely bloated because it had gotten to a point where my stomach wasn’t used to food. As time progressed, I started to see this more glamorized lifestyle on tiktok. A lifestyle proposed by skinny alt girls who never ate anything, never slept, and did a ton of drugs. I wanted to be like them, I wanted people to idolize me like people idolized them in the comments of their videos. I wanted my ribs to show, I wanted my arms and legs to be only skin and bones. That was at the height of it, about two months ago. I would go far too long without eating, only having monster energy drinks once a day and trying to stay awake all night so I would have big bags under my eyes. A few weeks ago, I started to realize how bad it was. I wanted to get out of it, I started to crave a far more healthy lifestyle where I was able to work out without passing out, where I could eat three meals a day plus snacks and not get extremely bloated and feel guilty. I started to eat more, buying more vegetables and fruits, experimenting with fun healthy recipes to see what I liked best, starting to become more active, etc. It’s been tough, I still have a lot of eating disorder thoughts, and I still struggle to get over 1500 calories even though I’m eating three filling meals. Now I work out every morning on weekdays, and it’s something I look forward to because I’m proud of myself for being active and I feel good after every workout even if I’m extremely sore. I enjoy making meals, and cooking is becoming more and more of a hobby that I very much enjoy. I have an app that I use to track my calories, carbs, protein, and fat, I try my best to eat foods that are high in all four but I still haven’t found an ideal meal that contains all four. If anyone has any tips for that, it would be nice to hear. My sleep schedule is still pretty bad (I’m writing this at three in the morning) But I’m definitely trying to get better. I’m sorry for writing so much, sometimes it just helps to be open about this stuff to complete strangers online lmao. A note to any girl my age who may be struggling with an eating disorder: your body is perfectly fine. You don’t need to change it for anyone, and if you feel uncomfortable with the way you look now, don’t resort to starving/binge eating. There’s thousands of healthier ways to lose/gain weight, and I guarantee you a healthy lifestyle will be much more fulfilling. You are perfect and beautiful how you are, and you’ll probably regret it in the future if you spend your whole teenage years obsessing over what you look like. Just go have fun, and fight your insecurities with confidence. If anyone read this far, I applaud you.

Speaking of that one little tapeworm comment. People actually did that!!!!! Very briefly during the 1950s and in the late Victorian era people actually ate tape worms for weight loss, this was totally a thing and is extraordinarily dangerous!

There is also significant research that says chronic malnutrition can effect generations after. Women who experienced the “Hunger Winter” in Holland over the winter of 1945 had decreased fertility, and their daughters had decreased fertility! Historically malnutrition has been a tragedy, a trauma, a famine may have been the worst experience in your life, and chronic malnutrition was both rampant, and seen as one of the greatest problems humanity faced. Do not let people on the internet convince you to put your body into a state of famine!
